- How high do you think you can jump?
- See if you can go that high, put sticky note as high as you can. Who was able to reach the point they thought they could?
- Now see if you get it higher. Use the different color sticky note.
- Who was able to go higher? Why is that?
- Who thinks they can go even higher?
- How does this relate to you as seniors? How might it illustrate your college and career choices? (fight senioritis, push yourself to do more than even you think you can.)
- Now the fun part- they have to get all of the sticky notes off the wall! Hehehe!
Backs against the wall. Step forward if…
- You are ready for graduation to be here.
- You are stressed or worried about being independent and going to college this fall?
- You are stressed or worried about choosing the right career?
- If you’re completely honest with yourself, you aren’t 110% sure which college you want to go to.
- If you’re completely honest with yourself, you aren’t 110% sure what career you want to have.
- You are feeling a lot of pressure from adults in your life to choose something NOW.
- You are feeling overwhelmed with all of this college and career and future STUFF.
Choosing a Career:
- Explain my process of choosing career, ask classroom teacher if she’d also like to share.
- Part of choosing a career is knowing about what you value. Values sort such as this one (make sure they are appropriate for your group), or from my College/Career Pack on TPT.
- Career: Holland Code, o*net online (worksheet if time allows- also included in the College/Career Pack)
College: Be smart about choosing a college. Find one that's like home.
Field trip to college corner,
Senior Survey (also in College/Career Pack)
Homework:
1. Talk to your parents about how you will pay for college.
2. Ask parents or teachers how they decided on their major or college.
3. Ask parents or adults who know you well what they could see you doing as a career.
4. Schedule a Senior Meeting with your Counselor
- Factors influencing college choice: What do you look for in a college?
- GPA and Test Scores- Look at college website for middle 50% range
- Location- staying close to home or moving away? If out of state- higher tuition. Living on campus or at home?
- Finances- Can you afford the school? Are you applying to scholarships? FAFSA?
- Majors offered- if you have an idea of what you want to do, does your college choice offer that major?
- Worksheet- what to look for when searching for a college (In my College/Career Pack)
- Colleges don’t JUST look at GPA. Extracurricular involvement? Volunteer work? Leadership? What are you doing with your free time? Want to start something at FCA?
- Have a back-up plan. What is your “safe” school? “safe” career?
