Self-Image
In the church's counseling office, we have a curved "mirror" lamp, shown below. I was counseling a 7 year old girl about self-image when she noticed the "funny looking" mirror. She started making funny faces at herself, and was so focused in on the mirror that any plans I had for the day would NOT be happening. So instead, I say a little prayer for some guidance, and pulled out my sticky notes. I had her write words about what she saw in the mirror (aka big nose, long body, etc). She came up with enough to completely cover the entire lamp!! At this point, it became clear to me what God was trying to help her/me see. The image that she was describing was NOT the person she really was, and was not the way others see her. The way that we see ourselves is but a distorted image of what God sees when he looks at us. We see all the negative, "funny-looking" things that we don't like. When God looks at us, he looks with LOVE, sees his Son. For a memory verse, we talked about Ephesians 2:10- We are God's Masterpiece. I love how God can use the most mundane of objects to create a powerful lesson for us all!
